This week, NGO's and activists were able to help suspend operations of a gold mine in Phitchit province (LINK). This mine is only suspended for 30 days while they conduct an investigation of the health affects it produces. This week, brought bad news to the Na Nong Bong community, as a community member has passed away due to high levels of cyanide contamination in his blood (LINK to view English, scroll down).
While there has been a lot of recent media coverage surrounding mining issues in Thailand, NGO P'Kovit is asking for ENGAGE's help to further spread the word. P'Kovit has started a new project of collecting and posting quotes from NGO's, academics, activists, artists, and doctors onto websites and Facebook pages. The quotes are used to pressure the government to protect the rights of the land and people. The quotes are asking the government not to approve of new mines and to shut down those in operation.
Due to the recent death in Na Nong Bong and the suspension of the Akara Resources mine in Phichit, P'Kovit thinks it is a great time to pressure the government. He is asking for people from the states (ENGAGE) to send a quote and a head-shot to be used in aiding the campaign and spreading the word. Sending quotes in English is fine, as they will be translated. You can find examples of these quotes on their facebook page (LINK). They are trying to post one quote a day, so our thoughts would help a lot.
P'Kovit thinks quotes from international sources will be powerful for the campaign. If you wish to participate in this project, please email j.peckinpaugh.ky@gmail.com with a quote and picture and it will get sent off for translation.
