Introducing our Spring Drive!

2/25/2015

ENGAGE is now beginning to move into the next stage of our fundraising for the Anti-mining tour to Mexico! This stage includes us running an online crowdfunding campaign and submitting grant applications to Sparkplug and AJ Muste Foundation, but we want all ENGAGE members to be as involved as possible. To prepare for our Spring Drive, our main fundraising campaign starting in April, we are asking ENGAGE members to host fundraisers in their own community in support of our campaign.

As you may have heard, Larissa Gaias, a CIEE Khon Kaen alum, has graciously volunteered to host a small fundraiser in her own community, with the proceeds of the event going towards our Mining Campaign. On April 3rd, she will be hosting an art show during her community's monthly art walk, featuring photographs and artwork done by former CIEE students telling the story of mining in the NE and Na Nong Bong.

We call on 12 ENGAGErs to step up and commit to hosting an event as part of our Spring Drive, running from April 3rd to May 17th. It would be so amazing to have multiple events around the country hosted by ENGAGE members - spreading awareness, getting people involved, and raising money!

It can be as big or as small as you want it to be, and feel free to be creative! Any amount of donations helps us get closer to reaching our goal, and it is only possible with the support of the network. Here are some suggested ideas:
  • Art show
  • A-thon event
  • Charity poker or game night ($ buy-in)
  • Educational forum/discussion
  • Fancy dinner ($ per head/ticket)
  • School/Teacher donation fundraiser
  • Party/BBQ with donation jar
  • Film/documentary screening
  • Coordinating with a business (donating % of their profits)
Contact Rachel Karpelowitz at engagerusa@gmail.com if you are interested in hosting an event!

We met our fundraising goal!

2/8/2015

As of last night at midnight, we have raised over $1,150, and met our goal for the week during our February Fundraiser for our Anti-Mining Campaign!

Thank you so much to everyone who donated, and to the friends and family members of those who donated to help us reach our goal. Your support and financial contribution means a lot to everyone involved, and got us closer to our total fundraising goal for our tour.

With your donations, we are now one step closer to being able to send our Thai delegates to Mexico, and supporting Na Nong Bong community members in their fight against the gold mine that is threatening their livelihoods.

2015 is a big one for ENGAGE, and now is our chance to start off the new year supporting and looking forward to our upcoming events!

This week are raising money for scholarships to send 5 Thai villagers and student and law activists to Mexico for an exchange with communities in Oaxaca and for an international anti-mining conference.

This is the
first part of our larger 2015 fundraising campaign. Our overall goal for the Mining Campaign is to raise $23,000 by the date of the delegation tour to Mexico (July). We have raised a total of $4,000 already, and we need another $1,150 by Saturday!
  • If everyone donates just $10 today, we will easily hit our goal!
  • Donate $50 or more and get a 2015 Khon Rak Ban Kerd (KRBK) community T-shirt from Na Nong Bong.
  • Tell all of your friends, families, and coworkers about our campaign as well, invite them to donate.

“The reason I want to go to Mexico is because I want to learn about the world, learn more about the problems that had happened in societies. I have read many books on (MST, Paulo Freire, Marxism) and have seen some of those problems firsthand. I hope that this trip to Mexico will be a good opportunity for me to gain more knowledge, analysis, and tools from a country that has a history of fighting against injustice in order to apply those experiences to Thailand.”
